2026 General Auditions

Now through May 1, submit your video audition for our General Auditions! 

Submit your video audition to [email protected] by May 1, 2026. Auditions should consist of two contrasting monologues with a total length of no more than four minutes.

Please use subject line: [YOUR NAME] GENERAL AUDITION.

PLEASE NOTE: The 2026 Essential Theatre Play Festival will take place August 7-23, 2026 at 7 Stages Theatre in Atlanta, GA. Rehearsals will take place in various locations in the metro area, generally during weekday evenings and weekend days in July and August.

Announcing the 2026 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award Winner, Susan Swavely!

We’re happy to announce that Susan Swavely’s Helen of the West has been chosen as the winner of the 2026 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award competition. A rich re-imagining of the fabled story of Helen of Troy, now seen as a mail-order bride in the American West, Swavely’s play will be given its World Premiere as part of the 2026 Essential Theatre Play Festival, running from August 7-23 at 7 Stages.

The Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, given out annually since 2001, is the only prize of its kind, exclusively dedicated to the work of Georgia playwrights with the winner receiving both a $1,000 cash prize and a full professional production.

Laura King is a playwright and dramaturg. She holds an MFA in playwriting from the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins University and a master’s in English from Northwestern University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Synchronicity Theatre in Atlanta and recently was the dramaturg for their production of The Dark Lady by Jessica B. Hill. Her play Merritt Anne and the Mighty Oak is a 2025 AATE Distinguished Play Award winner.
